What you eat may be shaping your skin more than you think
Your skin is not just something you see in the mirror. It is a living, dynamic organ that reflects what is happening inside your body.
If you have ever struggled with acne, dry skin, eczema, or slow healing, your diet may be playing a bigger role than you realize.
Research consistently shows that two main dietary patterns can disrupt your skin:
- Not getting enough of the nutrients your skin needs
- Getting too much of the foods that drive inflammation
Let’s walk through both so you can better understand what your skin might be trying to tell you.
When Your Skin Is Missing What It Needs
Your skin relies on a steady supply of nutrients to maintain its barrier, heal properly, and stay hydrated.
When key nutrients are lacking, your skin often shows early warning signs.
Key deficiencies that affect your skin
- Vitamin C and essential fatty acids
Low levels can lead to dry skin and slower wound healing (Min et al., 2024; Parga & Coven, 2025). - Zinc
Important for repair and immune function. Deficiency can show up as hair loss and skin inflammation (Min et al., 2024). - B vitamins (B2 and B3)
Deficiencies can lead to dermatitis and skin irritation (Lee et al., 2023; Min et al., 2024). - Protein and healthy fats
Restrictive diets that are too low in protein or healthy fats can weaken your skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity (Parga & Coven, 2025; Sharma et al., 2024).
When your body does not get enough of these building blocks, the skin barrier becomes weaker. This makes your skin more vulnerable to irritation, inflammation, and environmental stressors.
Over time, this can contribute to conditions like eczema, acne, and even premature aging.
When Your Diet Is Driving Inflammation
Just as important as what you are missing is what you may be getting too much of.
Many modern dietary patterns actively promote inflammation in the body, and your skin often reflects that.
Common dietary triggers for skin issues
1. High sugar and refined carbohydrates
Diets high in sugar and processed carbs (products made with flour, often with sugar or food additives) increase blood sugar and insulin levels, which can worsen acne and inflammation (Dall’Oglio et al., 2021; Meixiong et al., 2022).
2. Dairy and whey protein
Milk, especially skim milk, and whey protein supplements are linked to acne in many people, likely through hormonal pathways (Guertler et al., 2023; Alzaid et al., 2023).
3. Western-style diet
A diet high in ultra processed foods, unhealthy fats (e.g. deep fried or vegetable seeds oils like grapeseed, canola, sunflower, safflower, corn and soybean oil), too much red meat and alcohol can disrupt the skin barrier and increase inflammation, worsening conditions like psoriasis and eczema (Boggio et al., 2025; Diotallevi et al., 2022; Kanda et al., 2020).
4. Ultra-processed foods and additives
Low-fiber, highly ultra-processed diets can negatively affect your gut microbiome. This matters because your gut and skin are deeply connected through what is called the gut–skin axis (Ahmed & Mikail, 2024; Trompette et al., 2022).
When your gut is out of balance, your skin often follows.
Ultra-processed foods are foods that have been heavily altered from their original form and often contain ingredients you wouldn’t typically use in a home kitchen. They are usually made with refined starches, added sugars, unhealthy fats, and a variety of food additives to improve taste, texture, colour, or shelf life. Examples include soft drinks, candy, packaged snacks, instant noodles, many breakfast cereals, frozen meals, and processed meats.
Food additives are substances added to foods during manufacturing to achieve a specific purpose. Some help preserve freshness (preservatives), others improve colour (colourings), enhance flavour (flavour enhancers), create a smoother texture (emulsifiers and stabilizers), or add sweetness (artificial sweeteners). While many food additives are approved as safe by regulatory agencies, some research suggests that certain additives may negatively affect gut health, inflammation, or metabolism in susceptible individuals.
A simple rule of thumb: the fewer ingredients on the label—and the more those ingredients look like foods you recognize from your own kitchen—the less processed the food is likely to be.
The Gut–Skin Connection
One of the most powerful insights from modern research is how closely your gut health and skin health are linked.
When you eat enough fiber from foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains, your gut bacteria produce beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids. These help strengthen your skin barrier and reduce inflammation (Trompette et al., 2022).
On the other hand, a diet low in fiber and high in ultra-processed foods can lead to gut imbalance, which can show up as acne, eczema, or sensitive skin.
What Supports Healthy, Resilient Skin
The good news is that your skin responds remarkably well to positive changes.
Skin-supportive dietary patterns include:
- Whole, minimally processed foods
- Plenty of vegetables and fruits
- Healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and omega-3s from fish and leafy greens
- Adequate protein intake
- High-fiber foods to support gut health
These types of diets are consistently associated with better outcomes in acne, rosacea, and inflammatory skin conditions (Boggio et al., 2025; Gürtler & Laurenz, 2022; Kanda et al., 2020).
The Bottom Line
Your skin is not separate from the rest of your body. It is a reflection of your internal health.
Two major dietary patterns tend to disrupt skin balance:
- Nutrient deficiencies that weaken the skin barrier
- Excess intake of inflammatory foods that drive hormonal and immune changes
When you shift toward a nutrient-dense, whole-food, anti-inflammatory way of eating, you are not just feeding your body. You are actively supporting your skin from the inside out.
